Burnt Column
Çemberlitaş.
The Column of İstanbul is one of the most important examples of Roman art in Istanbul. The column is 35 meters tall today and can be seen from the Sea of Marmara and the Bosphorus as part of the famous historic skyline of Istanbul. Restoration work has been going on since 1955. Cracks in the porphyry were filled and the metal brackets renewed in 1972. Since 1985, the monument of the historic peninsula of Istanbul, including the column, have been listed as a World Heritage Site. As of 2007 the column is being restored by the Istanbul Municipality and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and is surrounded by iron bars for the restoration work. [Read More]
